羅素·威廉·福特（英語：Russell William Ford，1883年4月25日—1960年1月24日），為前美國職棒大聯盟的投手，生涯曾效力於高地人/洋基與健壯/藍人兩隊。福特是砂紙球的發明者，他會在手套裡面塞砂紙，並透過砂紙磨擦改變球的外殼形狀。
1910年，福特靠著砂紙球拿下26勝，不過後來聯盟在1914年禁止該球種的使用，福特的表現也就此下滑。他在1917年離開大聯盟，後來他入選加拿大棒球名人堂。
早年
[编辑]福特在加拿大出生，[1]三歲時全家移民到美國。[2]前美國總統格羅弗·克里夫蘭和福特的母親是表兄妹關係。[3]他的哥哥Gene曾在1905年為老虎出賽7場比賽，弟弟Walter則是小聯盟選手。[4]
職業生涯
[编辑]1904年起，福特在小聯盟打球。[5]他在1907年發明了砂紙球，但這源自於一場意外。[6]他在雨中與捕手熱身期間，球不小心打到木製牆壁上，造成球的表面出現擦痕。但福特沒有換球，並在投球期間發現球的旋轉角度更為刁鑽。[7]於是他開始研究投球造成的空氣阻力，不過一切都只是測試，他並未在實戰中使用。[8]
1908年，洋基在小聯盟注意到福特的表現，並在1909年與他簽約。[9]
1909年4月28日，福特登上大聯盟。他投了3局失4分，並丟出3次觸身球。該年他就只出賽這麼一場比賽，其餘時間都待在小聯盟。
1910年，福特首次將砂紙球納入實戰中，該年他投出26勝6敗，防禦率1.65。[10]他的室友Eddie Foster和Earle Gardner也都知道他在使用砂紙球。[11]1911年，他投出22勝11敗，防禦率2.27。[12]不過隔年他只拿下13勝21敗，並挨了11轟。[13]1913年，他拿下13勝18敗，防禦率2.66。[14]這年他因為肩膀和手腕不適，放棄使用口水球。[15]
1914年，由於洋基試圖將福特減薪，因此福特跳槽加入聯邦聯盟，加盟水牛城健壯。[16]該年他拿下21勝6敗，防禦率僅1.82。[17][18]9月，洋基投手Ray Keating在比賽中被抓到使用砂紙球。[19]大聯盟決定永久禁止該球種，並規定使用該球種的人將禁賽30天加100美元罰款。[20][21][22]
1915年，無法使用砂紙球的福特只拿下5勝9敗，防禦率4.52，[23]最後他在7月被釋出。[24]聯邦聯盟解散後，福特回到洋基。[25]他在小聯盟打了2年，最後被洋基釋出。[26]
1922年，福特在明尼蘇達大學擔任棒球隊教練。[27]

個人生活
[编辑]福特在1912年結婚，並育有2女。1923年起，他在銀行工作。[28]1930年代，他在紐約的一家工程公司擔任製圖員。[29]
福特的太太在1957年去世，而福特在1960年去世，享年76歲。他在1987年入選加拿大棒球名人堂，[30]2002年和2004年先後入選曼尼托巴運動名人堂和曼尼托巴棒球名人堂。[31][32]
