2012年7月，快餐业发生一起丑闻。一名匿名汉堡王员工在图片论坛4chan上传照片，显示自己站在装满生菜的塑料箱里。4chan用户随即通过Exif数据查出照片拍摄于俄亥俄州梅菲尔德海茨的一家汉堡王餐厅。该事件导致汉堡王网络品牌形象严重受损，致使三名员工遭解雇。此事此后多次在网络上热传。[1][2]

2012年7月16日，一名匿名4chan用户发布了一张三天前[3]拍摄的照片，显示一名汉堡王员工踩在两盘生菜上，并配文：“这就是你在汉堡王吃的生菜。”[1][4]不到十五分钟，其他4chan用户（包括黑客组织匿名者成员）便通过照片附带的Exif元数据及纸箱上的条码，查明该照片拍摄于俄亥俄州梅菲尔德海茨的一家汉堡王餐厅。[5][6][7]他们随即致电餐厅，并将照片转发给当地媒体。梅菲尔德海茨的Facebook页面也被照片与评论刷屏。[8]

2017年末，该迷因再度流行。一位名叫Chills（亦称Dylan）的YouTuber在一支讲述4chan用户破解谜团的视频中，将此照及其故事作为开场，并以“第十五位：汉堡王脚踩生菜”介绍。[9][15]Chills配音语调古怪不自然，因此广遭嘲讽与恶搞。网友还制作并分享了多个配音混音版，其中包括上传至歌词网站Genius的注释版。[9]

《The Takeout》作者理查德·迪奇科称这一迷因为“互联网上流传最久的笑话之一”，而《Eater》作者葆拉·福布斯则写道：“总有一天，父母会把这样的故事讲给孩子听，以警告他们不要在网上发布不该发的东西。”[9][16]
