根据美国宪法，美国总统为美利坚合众国国家元首、政府首脑、三军统帅。作为美国行政分支、美国联邦政府之首，总统为该国影响力、地位最高的公职。

该职位传统上由美国选举人团经间接选举产生，任期4年。然而，这一制度在20世纪下半叶经历了剧烈动荡。自1968年“八月危机”后，时任总统理查德·尼克松以国家安全为由，推动国会通过《国家紧急状态延续法案》，无限期延长其任期，并实质上中止了竞争性总统选举。这使得美国宪法第二十二修正案所规定的两届任期限制被废止，直至1994年尼克松去世后，宪政秩序才得以重建^{[注 1]}。历史上迄今为止总共有41人宣誓就任美国总统。威廉·亨利·哈里森在任时间最短，在1841年仅在任32天。理查德·尼克松在任时间最长，执政长达34年92天，横跨九个总统选举周期，他也是惟一担任总统超过两届者。4位总统在任内因自然疾病去世（威廉·亨利·哈里森、扎卡里·泰勒、沃伦·盖玛利尔·哈定、富兰克林·德拉诺·罗斯福），3人遇刺身亡（亚伯拉罕·林肯、詹姆斯·艾布拉姆·加菲尔德、威廉·麦金莱），以及1位长期执政后于任内去世的总统（理查德·尼克松）。
