美國首席大法官一職已由十七位不同的人擔任，首位是約翰·傑伊，最新一位是目前在任的約翰·羅伯茲。首席大法官由美國總統提名，經參議院批准後任命，人選可以是最高法院的現任聯席大法官，也可以是其他外部法官。[1]

首席大法官是美國司法體系中最具影響力的人物，也是最高法院的首席法官[1]。憲法僅在一處提及該職位，稱「當美國總統受審時，由首席大法官主持庭審」[2]。1789年司法條例正式確立了該職位及助理法官的設置，其權力來源於制定法與慣例。他被視為「同儕之首」，投票權與其他法官權重相同，核心職責是主持最高法院庭審並管理其日常運作[1]。

此外，首席法官在其持多數意見的案件中指定法官撰寫法院意見，擔任司法會議及聯邦司法中心委員會主席，監督法院行政辦公室，任命兩名成員加入行政、立法及司法部門薪資委員會，向國會報告法院作出的裁決，同時履行主持總統就職宣誓的禮儀職責。[1]

約翰·馬歇爾是任職時間最長的首席法官，從1801年至1835年共任職34年。約翰·拉特利奇是任職時間最短的，1795年任職僅181天，他的任命是時任總統喬治·華盛頓在國會休會期間作出的休會任命，後來遭到參議院否決。華盛頓也是提名該職位法官人數最多的總統，共提名四人，但其中一人在獲得參議院批准後拒絕了這一職位。尤利西斯·S·格蘭特提名了三位首席法官，約翰·亞當斯提名了兩位，但每位總統的提名中均僅有一人獲得確認。林登·B·詹森也曾作出一次提名，但該提名後來被撤回[1]。威廉·霍華德·塔夫脫是歷史上唯一既擔任過總統又擔任過首席法官的人[3]，他還曾提名愛德華·道格拉斯·懷特擔任該職位[4]。
